This course unit discusses the key theories and concepts related to financial management which will provide a solid foundation for the advanced courses related to the field of finance. It covers the general functions of financial management and in relation to general decision making in other fields. The rest of the course concentrates on more technical aspects such as time value of money, valuation of long term securities, risk and return, and determination of cost of capital.

After successful completion of the course unit the students should be able to; 

1.  Define and explain the fundamental concepts of financial management.

2.  Understand the investment process in money and capital markets and nature and practical knowledge of financial markets

3.  Acquire knowledge on the time value of money principle and how the same could be applied in investment decisions and for valuation of long term securities

4.  Identify & evaluate the risk and return associated with various financial investments with special reference to the money market & capital market instruments

5.  Determine the overall cost of capital (WACC) which is  suitable for a firm or a specific project
